Carpet repair, cleaning and caring increases the life of the carpet.
While carpet caring and carpet cleaning have been discussed in the carpet cleaning section of the site, this page deals with repairing small problem areas of the carpet.

It is suggested that repairs at home should be done on small damages to the carpet.
For cigarette burns or other similar damages, if the melted ends of the carpet fibers are not too deep, the melted carpet fiber can be cut off using a razor blade or a knife. This will not hide the damage totally, but, only a minimum damage will be displayed.

If the carpet fibers have been burned deep, it can be replaced by using fibers from other areas to replace the damaged fibers. Cut the damaged fibers up to the base from the carpet using a razor or similar tool. Use fibers from other areas of the carpet, like areas under the cupboard or sofas, or from carpet pieces that you must have saved during the carpet installation. Once the damaged fibers have been cut off, apply water proof glue like goop to the base of the carpet. Then press in the new fibers in place on the glue. Let the glue to dry off. Be careful, while applying glue that they are not applied to other fibers or these may get glued together.

Before making any repairs check whether your insurance covers carpet damages and act accordingly. Not throwing of small pieces of carpets while installations is a good practice and these pieces come in handy later on. For larger damages, it is suggested that availing services of a professional is advisable, unless you are sure you can mange the repair and have the patience to do so.
