Carpets have been in use since the 3rd and 2nd millennium BC, but, have been extensively used as a floor coverings only since the 18th century.

Hand knitted carpets and rugs have their origin in Central Asia and they have been introduced to Spain in as later as the 10th century. Later it spread to other European countries where Turkish carpets where hung on walls or were used on tables.
Although, in the 17th century Persian Carpets started selling extensively in Europe, it was only in about the 18th century that carpets started being used not only as a decorative object that was hung on walls but also as a floor covering.
