The Persian carpets, Iran of the present day, saw their best period from 1500 to about 1725, during the reign of Safavid dynasty, especially during the rule of Shah Tahmasp and Shah Abbas. Shah Abbas himself being a skillful weaver, established workshops in various cities to spread the weaving activity and the sale of carpets throughout the country. This resulted in the art of creating rugs getting transformed to a sophisticated art. It also helped in creating beautiful rugs which advanced from the regular geometric design to the more curvilinear pattern. A lot of art was added to the rugs due to the increasing participation of artist in the rug weaving creation.

Persian rugs can be categorized as

Farsh / Qali are generally referred to carpets with a larger spread (greater than 6 feet X 4 feet). The Qalicheh is normally the smaller carpets with a size of 6 feet X 4 feet or smaller. The rough, nomadic carpets are referred to as Kilim.

Present day Persian carpets are manufactured on mechanized looms. Even though machines are used to manufacture the present day rugs, still a large number of artisans hand weave rugs in Iran. These hand woven carpets and rugs command a higher price than the mechanized ones.

Persian rugs are available in various sizes and shapes, the rectangular one being the most commonly manufactured one.
Material used in the manufacturing of these carpets include wool, cotton and silk. Wool is the most common and preferred material for its quality, aesthetics and durability. Silk is the least preferred one as it is costly compared to wool and it is also less durable. Silk carpets are normally used for decorative purposes: to be hung on walls or as table pieces.
